Job Reference ablgroup/TP/916/349
Be the energy behind change. Join ABL Group.
ABL Group is a leading global independent energy and marine consultant working in energy and oceans to de-risk and drive the energy transition across the renewables, maritime, and oil and gas sectors, offering the deepest pool of expertise across marine and engineering disciplines in more than 300 locations globally.
We are offering an entry‑level opportunity for an Electrical or Electronics Engineering graduate to begin a career in the maritime industry. You’ll start by learning the fundamentals of vessel design and ship types. From there, you’ll be introduced to Dynamic Positioning (DP) vessels—ships equipped with computer‑controlled systems that maintain position and heading using thrusters and propellers to counteract wind, waves, and currents. Under the guidance of our experienced team, you’ll develop the skills needed to perform assurance tasks on these vessels.
In time, you will be able to do the following:
- Conduct assurance tasks, annual trials, proving trials, audits, and more on DP vessels and other critical ship systems.
- Support electrical ship design projects and contribute to technical and procedural reviews.
- Understand and apply industry guidance such as IMO, MTS, OCIMF, and IMCA.
- Develop consultancy skills including client management, business development, and project management.
- Undertake client visits—both offshore and onshore—locally and internationally.
- Learn about hybrid vessel technology and autonomous shipping.
- Work toward achieving IMCA DP Trials and Assurance Practitioner Accreditation.
What are we looking for?
You should be a current student or recent graduate in Electrical or Electronics Engineering. Experience or interest in the maritime sector is welcome but not essential. Most importantly, we’re looking for someone eager to learn, grow, and take on new challenges. Ideally, you will bring:
- A solid understanding of Electrical/Electronic Engineering principles (a master’s degree is a plus).
- Knowledge of one or more of the following: HV/MV/LV AC/DC power generation and distribution, battery energy storage systems, frequency drives, analogue/digital electronics, analogue/digital communications, automatic control systems, data networks, PLCs.
- The ability to interpret complex manuals and drawings and produce simplified VISIO or CAD diagrams.
- Beneficial (but not required): experience with power system modelling/simulation, electrical system design, and protection coordination studies.
